A practical 6-week course on building playlists for psychedelic therapy — this fall taught in French, by Alain Menier.

Music plays an arguably critical but still poorly understood role in the efficacy of psychedelic-assisted therapy. This 6-week course teaches you to build playlists that genuinely support the experience.

This fall’s course is taught entirely in French. Lectures, discussion and materials are in French. We plan to offer the course in English again in 2027 — let us know you’re interested.

Applied almost universally in clinical trials, current legal treatment options, underground work, and traditional and Indigenous ceremonial settings, music may be the most significant — and most variable — aspect of the “set and setting” of a psychedelic experience.

You’ll explore the theoretical and scientific dimensions of this rich terrain and gain practical skills for crafting custom playlists. The course focuses on psilocybin, MDMA and ketamine, with discussion of how the principles apply to other experiences (holotropic breathwork, cannabis, LSD, 5-MeO-DMT). You’ll finish with your own playlist and an exclusive twelve-hour playlist created by the group.

Alain Menier

Certified holotropic breathwork facilitator · Montreal Holotropic

Alain obtained his certification as a holotropic breathwork facilitator in 2011. He has since organized more than 150 group workshops and introduced holotropic breathwork to over a thousand people. He has lectured extensively on the links between perinatality and the psyche, as well as on the work of Stan Grof, and was coordinator in Montreal for various MAPS studies between 2017 and 2022. Since 2021, he has collaborated on Therapsil’s therapist training. He is passionate about music.

What we’ll cover

  • Week 1 · Setting — a brief history of music and psychedelic therapy
  • Week 2 · Set — developing vocabulary, structure and methodology
  • Week 3 · Psilocybin — decomposition and breakthrough
  • Week 4 · MDMA — heart-openings and pitfalls
  • Week 5 · Ketamine — dissociation and reconnection
  • Week 6 · Finale — finding your voice, and the future of music and psychedelic therapy

How the course works

  • Each week: a live lecture and Q&A, with a few assigned readings (4 in total).
  • As the course progresses: assignments sourcing music for specific segments of a psychedelic journey, building to your own complete playlist.
  • What you need: Zoom, good headphones or a sound system, and ideally a Spotify account (free is fine).
  • Who it’s for: therapists and guides responsible for music for their clients — and anyone building playlists for their own exploration or peer groups. French comprehension is required.
  • What it doesn’t cover: live music and sound healing, which could each warrant a course of their own.
