Psychedelic Assisted Therapy

Psychotherapy provided within regulated, clinical frameworks — with safety, ethics, and evidence at the centre.

Psychedelic-assisted therapy is an emerging area of mental-health care in which psychotherapy is provided in conjunction with a psychedelic medicine, within specific clinical and legal frameworks. At Refuge, our focus is the therapy — the preparation, support, and integration that make this work safe and meaningful.

How it works

This work is a process, not a single event. It typically unfolds in three phases:

Preparation. Building safety, trust, and readiness with your therapist, and clarifying intentions and expectations.

The session. Where clinically and legally appropriate, the medicine phase takes place in a supported, carefully held setting.

Integration. Making sense of the experience and weaving its insights into lasting change — often the most important part of the work.

Access and eligibility

In Canada, access to psychedelic medicines for therapeutic purposes is limited and regulated — for example, through Health Canada’s Special Access Program (SAP), approved clinical settings, or research. Eligibility is determined by clinical and regulatory criteria, and not everyone qualifies. The medical and regulatory side is handled by our medical partners at Santé Cannabis; Refuge provides the psychotherapy.

Please note: Refuge does not sell, prescribe, or dispense any medication or substance, legal or otherwise. We provide psychotherapy to clients who meet the regulatory and clinical criteria for assisted therapies, in collaboration with our medical partners at Santé Cannabis. The information on this page is educational; it is not medical advice, a recommendation, or an offer of treatment.
